Tom Geismar (Born 1931) is an Americal graphic designer known for his contributions to logo and corporate identity design. As a founding partner of the renowned design firm Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv, Geismar's work has left an indelible mark on the visual landscape of numerous iconic global brands.
Tom Geismar completed his education at the Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University. He later earned a master's degree in graphic design from Yale University, School of Art and Architecture.
In 1956, Geismar co-founded Brownjohn, Chermayeff & Geismar Associates, alongside Robert Brownjohn and Ivan Chermayeff. Brownjohn left in 1959 and the firm became Chermayeff & Geismar Inc. The firm quickly gained recognition for its bold and innovative approach to logo design, creating some of the most recognizable logos in the world. Some of their notable projects include identity for Chase Manhattan Bank, Mobil Oil, NBC, Xerox, PBS, National Geographic, Univision, among many others.
Geismar emphasizes three fundamental criteria for successful logo design: appropriateness, distinctiveness, and flexibility. He believes that a logo must fit well with the client's business while standing out as easily recognizable. Additionally, it should work across various sizes and contexts, from business cards to large signage.
While technology has transformed the tools available to designers, Geismar maintains that the core principles of good design remain unchanged. He values the tactile nature of sketching with pen and paper, finding it more liberating than working directly on a computer. This blend of traditional techniques with modern practices allows him to create designs that are both timeless and relevant.
Over his six-decade career, Tom Geismar has received numerous accolades for his work. He was awarded the AIGA medal in 1979, recognizing his exceptional achievements in graphic design. In 1998, he was inducted into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame. In 2014, he was honored with the National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement alongside Ivan Chermayeff. He also received the School of Visual Arts’ 26th Masters Series Award.
Geismar’s influence on the field of graphic design is immeasurable. Through his work, he has left an indelible mark on the world of visual identity design, one that continues to inspire generations of designers to this day.
