NCERT Logo

Deepak Singh Ola

20-07-2024

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) logo was designed by Manubhai Chhaganlal Gajjar in 1961 at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. The logo consists of three swans intertwined to create a logomark representing R&D, training, and extension. The logotype was also creatively designed, with the form of the letter “E” shaped like books.

NCERT Logo

The longevity of the NCERT logo is a testament to its timeless design, having been in use for more than half a century. However, despite its strengths, the logo is not without its flaws. While the letter “E” in the logotype designed in the form of books adds a creative touch, it also impacts the logo's legibility, especially when printed in smaller sizes. Instead of appearing as books, the letter “E” often looks like a printing mistake, which diminishes the overall effectiveness of the logo in certain contexts (see image below).

Such treatment of the logotype is more suitable when the logo exists solely as a logotype. In the case of the NCERT logo, which is a combination mark, incorporating both the logomark and the logotype, the intricate design of the letter “E” complicates the visual integrity of the logo. Unlike designers, the general public only notices logos for a split second rather than examining them closely. Therefore, simplicity and clarity are crucial for ensuring the logo communicates its intended message effectively.
